Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

Delight yourself also in the Lord,

This Bible verse is about hope. It is also a Bible verse about joy from the Book of Psalms, written by David.

It is always worth looking at the verses that proceed and come after the verse you are interested in. In this portion of scripture from the Psalms all five scriptures here are a blessing when taken together.

Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.  For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, And wither as the green herb.

Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. 4Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. (Psalm 37: 1-5)

When writing articles about the Bible, for me, it really is like looking into a mirror as in says in James 1:22-24:

But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror; for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. (James 1:22-24)

Many times as I write I feel blessed in parts of my mind and heart and also hope where I have areas of my life that need encouragement. In this case, I am blessed reading this Psalm.

Many times, when I have seen people who have a presence in society that they have gained for themselves by stepping on other people, I wonder why they seem to prosper and why God allows it. You only have to read newspapers and watch TV to see where people have shamelessly abused the poor and vulnerable to become financially rich. Even large corporations do this. Supermarkets, for example, sell poor-quality, junky food to those who do not know about nutrition and cooking. They do not know how cheaply you can feed your family by buying healthy natural basics such as vegetables, meat and eggs and remain well. These organisations do not seem to care that poor people become obese and suffer from life threatening conditions. Other organisations continuously advertise products selling things that people do not really want or need, only causing debt with their complicated so-called ‘interest free’ terms.

This scripture reminds me that the golden rule is to not to worry about evildoers but to continue to trust in the Lord and commit your way to Him. It is better to think about the goodness of the Lord, and the joy it is to know him than to worry about the world which will one day pass away. The promise in this Bible verse is that if we delight ourselves in Him, He will give us the desires of our hearts.

Today, do not look at what evil people and evil organisations are doing. In the scheme of eternity, they will wither and die like cut grass on a warm day. Look to the Lord and delight yourself in Him and not look at what the world is doing nor be tempted by their crafty offers.

Let’s pray:

Dear Heavenly Father, today I commit my way to you and trust in you. I know that you will bring my desires of my heart to pass. Today I bring these thoughts and dreams to you. Let me also have a heart that is ever delighting and being happy in my relationship with you. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above… James 1: 17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17

This Bible verse on faith was written by James, the half brother of Jesus.   If anybody knew the gift of God it would be James. It is found in the New Testament letter of James. He lived and grew up with Jesus, the firstborn of their mother Mary. James witnessed first-hand Jesus’ sinless and invariably perfect life that had no shadow or anything questionable.  Jesus was the spotless Son of God – the perfect gift to the world.

This Bible verse in James is reminiscent of the scripture verse in Matthew’s gospel which says, “Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you.   For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.   Or who is there among you, who, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?   Or if he asks for a fish, who will give him a serpent?   If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

By considering these verses together we can be confident that we can ask the Father in faith and we will receive only good things.  We can also seek, and the idea here is to be diligent in seeking and God will reward you with Heaven’s best, His very good gift.  We can also keep knocking on the door and when the door opens in God’s perfect timing, it will be worth striving for. Hope can be that doorway too.  Today, let us take our hopes and dreams to the Father and press into Him in faith knowing that in Him there is fullness of joy and a hope for our futures.
