Faith Scriptures of encouragement and comfort
The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd – the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
John 10: 7-10
These Bible verses are favorite faith scriptures about God’s protection. It is found in John’s Gospel chapter 10.
Jesus says that He is our good Shepherd and also that He is the Door – the door to salvation.
Jesus uses a parable to describe how a true shepherd cares for his sheep and the sheep know His voice and the shepherd knows each of their names. He also says that a good shepherd goes ahead of the sheep and leads them.
Jesus then describes somebody who breaks into the sheepfold without using the door – this person is a thief only intending harm. This person does not care for the sheep and the sheep do not recognise his voice and will run away from him. This thief would not protect these sheep from a wolf but would abandon them to danger.
As Jesus spoke this parable onlookers did not understand what it meant. Jesus then declares
“Most certainly, I tell you, I am the sheep’s door. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters in by me, he will be saved, and will go in and go out, and will find pasture. The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
John 10: 7-10
It is good to be reminded of the most famous Psalm 23:
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
If you believe in Jesus you are saved from eternal death. Jesus is to you, the door that leads to eternal life. He is also the shepherd of your soul, and will lead you to abundant life and green pastures of safety and provision. You will not fear danger, because as the Good Shepherd, He has gone before you – even death itself. You may walk through the valley of the shadow of darkness but He is with you and you will arrive at the house of the Lord. This is a great scripture for comfort when facing death.
Only Jesus can be trusted with your eternal destiny. Any other voice, that promises you salvation and eternal life, or even great revelations and new ideas, is a false voice – that is why it says in John 10:10 that the thief comes to kill, steal and destroy. If you ever encounter a philosophy or belief system that promotes killing, stealing and destruction you will immediately recognise that this is not from the Good Shepherd Jesus because He will always lead you into life and life more abundantly.
If you do not know Jesus as your Lord and Saviour there is a simple prayer which will take you through the Door – Jesus. He is the door to eternal life. It is called the prayer of salvation.
